In May 2018 I photographed Susie and Jerry’s wedding ceremony and reception at Cley Windmill. The village of Cley is about 5 miles east of the picturesque Wells Next The Sea on the North Norfolk coast.

I first met Sussie and Jerry on their engagement photo shoot that took place on Hunstanton Beach. This gave me chance to get to know the couple and to discus the photo requirements for their special day.
The Wedding Day
I arrived about one hour before the ceremony to photograph the bride and groom getting ready. After the ceremony we did a photo shoot inside the Mill and gardens. I stayed for the reception and was provided with a lovely meal. Sadly the weather on the day was grey and overcast. That was a shame because the venue looks stunning on a sunny day.
I had a really nice afternoon and wish Sussie and Jerry a long and happy marriage. They received their photographs about a week afterwards. They were delighted. Sussie sent a message saying “Many thanks. Some great shots there”.
The Windmill As A Venue To Get Married
Their licence allows 25 people including the bride and groom in the ceremony room. If you would just like to enjoy the unique experience of having your ceremony in the mill, but are planning a larger reception elsewhere, the venue is very happy to accommodate this. Also if you organise the ceremony for 2.00pm you can have the use of the Sitting Room and the Reception Room from 1.30pm – 4.30pm.
This gives you time after the ceremony to enjoy a glass of champagne and canapés. These will be served in the Dining Room and to take photographs. You are welcome to use the balcony or the garden for these (weather permitting). If you would like tea or even a Norfolk Cream Tea again the venue will be happy to do this.
There is also a possibility that the venue may be able to organise a breakfast dependent on the time of year and their diary commitments.
If, however, you would like to take over the mill like I did for a fashion photo shoot and make a real occasion of it you can either book all of the b&b rooms (which accommodate 16) or include their self-catering cottage and take your numbers to 18 or 20. In this case, your wedding would take place at the later time of 4:00pm and then go on to dine in the atmospheric candlelit Dining Room at, say, 6.00pm.
