Norfolk Actress Head Shots – Guest Blog by Natalie Lauren
As a young actor, I know how important an excellent head shot is. Not a good one, not a great one, an excellent one. In this industry they might as well be your business card, credibility and USP all rolled into one. Its the first thing an agent or casting director looks at and in seconds a decision is made about you. Are you interesting, or not? Unique, or not? Do you intrigue? Do you have something to offer me? These are the questions that form the basis of that decision which can lead to a meeting with that agent or a call from that casting office. In short, your head shot is your key to the door.

I’ve worked with David as a model on numerous occasions. His work is fantastic and working with him is even better. This is important. If you are not working with someone who makes you comfortable, you aren’t going to be relaxed enough to get the perfect shots you need. I’ve also worked with many other photographers in Norwich and in London. So, together, we hatched a plan to bring London style head shot photography to Norfolk.
There are a few important contingencies in head shot photography, natural light, studio light, studio shoot and an outdoor shoot. David has a studio that can give you the best combination of natural light in studio environment. With a variety of backdrops, and ample natural light David has facilities where you can create a variety of looks that you might need. The studio is perfect for the task and my favourite shots were taken here. All you have to think about is character and clothing.
My Head Shots
For all my head shot shoots I bring a variety of tops exhibiting a variety of colours, necklines and character. Importantly all are incredibly simple. No patterns, no details, just colour and shape. David and I spent about an hour rotating through a dozen different tops and 3 different backgrounds so that we could create a portfolio of different looks, strong, vulnerable, mature, young, smiling, neutral etc. A photo for every potential casting. David gives you feedback and assistance throughout, just little things to get the right shot, chin position, shoulder angle etc. In addition, he can show you the photos as you go so you can make sure you are portraying what you want.
After this, we packed up and went outside. Outdoor shoots are what I’m used to in London and I like them, just you, the photographer, and a camera. Of course, they are weather dependent, but the great thing about David is his knowledge of the local area. In just a 2 minute walk from each location we had backdrops of stone, brick, concrete, woodland, river and leaves. Another hour and few discrete changes of tops and we had a collection of hundreds of photo options.
A few days later an email arrived with a link to my online gallery, from there I could view 120 of the best shots from our shoot. My agent and I looked through the shots, picked out our favourites and David kindly retouched the odd blemish and voila! A portfolio of exactly what I need.
Head Shot Testimonial
“I recommend David highly. He is kind, approachable and, most importantly, he knows his stuff. He offers a range of packages whether you’re starting fresh, updating, or just looking for one specific photo, he can build something around your needs to get you what you want. Just look at the photos from our shoot and see for yourself!
Thank you, David”.
