How Did It All Start
I had a Kodak Instamatic from an early age and enjoyed taking photos on holiday. I still have this camera as a reminder of how my interest first started. However my interest developed into a hobby at the age of around 18.
I had two inspriations. I attended an 18th birthday party and I along with several members of my 6th form was invited back to the young woman’s house afterwards. She had been on a photography course and had an album of photographs taken at night time. I was fascinated and intrigued about how photographs could be taken in the dark. At the same time I also met a photographer who created slide / tape shows using several projectors with 35mm slides that were pulsed and set to music stored on cassette tape.
As a consequence my parents bought me a single lens reflex (SLR) camera for Christmas. It was a Nikon FM with a 50mm lens. The camera body was a gift from them and the lens was purchased from my Granddad’s money after he had passed away a few months earlier. I then spent many years as a landscape photographer mainly taking images in Norfolk and North Suffolk and in central Europe whilst on holiday. I also photographed weddings for friends and family.
As my plan was to be a professional photographer in the future photographing weddings was excellent practice. Everyone was pleased with the results so that was very encouraging to go on to pursue my passion as a professional photographer.
City and Guilds in Photography
In the early 1990’s I decided to do a 2 year City and Guilds in Photography course as an evening class. I really enjoyed this. As this was before the age of digital photography I learned how to process film and to develop prints in a darkroom. My darkroom was the kitchen with blinds to stop the light from entering.
For my City and Guilds qualification I had to submit 5 different portfolios and undertake an examination at the end. I passed the examination and my portfolios were awarded 3 distinctions and 2 credits. As member of the Royal Photographic Society I was given their Licentiateship status.
In the early 2000’s I began the process of working digitally. I love digital photography and processing images on a computer. Photography has come a long way from the days of working in a dark room with dangerous and smelly chemicals.
I have lived and worked in Norfolk for all of my life. After spending several years of training, learning about business and working on several key projects in Norfolk, I finally achieved my goal of setting up my own photography business. In 2012 I created David Woodcock Photography Limited and now operate as a full time photographer. As well as photography I love meeting all sorts of interesting people from different backgrounds.
I enjoy life, experiences and all the things around me. I love to capture these as photos. They are a reminder of who I am, feelings that I’ve had, places I have visited, my passions in life, the people I like and love plus a whole lot more. If I can do a little of the same for you that gives me enormous pleasure.
My business is all about capturing your feelings and moments in time and providing them to you. Weddings, engagements, parties, portraits and model portfolios are some examples where I can capture special moments in time for you to look back on and treasure forever.
My business is also about helping your business. If you want to create interest to promote your products, services or a property I will provide you with creative images to achieve this. I have an eye for detail and composition. My photographic style is modern and contemporary.
I also love the diversity of the Norfolk and Suffolk landscape and the qualities of light at different times of the day and throughout the seasons. I photograph landscapes and sell these as digital downloads, prints and canvas prints. Please visit my online shop where you can purchase a variety of products.
